Yabatech Rector Challenges Youths To Develop Their Skills

The 2018 World Youth Skills Day has come and gone but words of encouragement by the Rector, Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe during the celebration in the College was a wakeup call by charging the youth in the community to expanding their skills in order to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Omokungbe noted that the College has previously hosted inspiring people like Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde; Alibaba, Adebola Williams, Mai Atafo, Sola Animashaun and others to challenge our youths in the community to develop their skills. Indelible marks were created in a number of youths and they were inspired to take up innovative entrepreneurship activities; innovative, solve problems and raise the bar in their various quests.

He stated that in 2015, the United Nations launched the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an ambitious target to eradicate extreme poverty and empower the world population to thrive. Sustainability, a key word in the challenge is defined in terms of economic, environmental and social capacities of well-being. Man has a duty to develop ways to improve the environment rather than destroy it; a central reason for that is the impact of climate change that has created so much damage in our world.

“The UNEVOC main theme for this year is Get Skilled, Go Green; Go Green, Get Skilled, which aligns with the worldwide need for sustainability. A synonymous for sustainability is “greening” which is used in the theme to breakdown the several areas which include Carbon Footprint; Energy and Resources Efficiency, Green Jobs, Green Skills and Green Governance. We are bringing this discourse to our youths to increase their awareness about global trends and dimensions. It is also a challenge to our youths to develop skills that will provide green and innovative solutions to today and tomorrow’s problems, also, it is important to get the youths prepared and involved in the things that would shape their lives and the society in the days to come, because tomorrow belongs to the youth”.

Various notable speakers were invited to convince students on embracing entrepreneurship, the Senior Lecturer in the department of Sociology, University of Lagos, Dr. Franca Attoh spoke on Green Governance and Gender Equity; the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kronikla & Associates, Mr. Akin Fafunke spoke on Green Jobs and Sustainable Lifestyle, Chief Energizing Officer, Consistent Energy Limited, Mr. Segun Adaju represented by Mr. Sukanmi Olowo spoke on Carbon Footprint, Renewable Energy & Resource Efficiency, while an International Fashion Designer; an Alumnus of Yabatech, Ejiro Amos-Tafiri spoke extensively on entrepreneurship, using herself as a typical example.

During the program, the Director of Flexible Skills Development (FSD), Dr. Ibrahim Adedotun Abdul introduced four flexible short courses to empower the public, to diversify income and to make life easier. The programs are: Vegetable Farming, Lands Capping and Garden Design (Planting of grass and flowers), Grass Cutter Farming, Print Media Enterprises, and Operating Video Camera and Editing at affordable prices, which are between 6 to 12 weeks at both Yaba and Epe campuses.
