Fagbemi Promises To Reinstate SUG In Yabatech

Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN, the Chairman Governing Council of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), has promised the students of the institution that the suspension placed on the Student Union Government (SUG) by the previous Governing Council led by Barrister Ebenezer Babatope would be lifted after certain conditions are met.

Fagbemi was live on Yabatech Radio 89.3 FM in where he addressed YABATECH students who were not physically on campus as at that time due to COVID-19 pandemic. It was an interactive program as students were able to ask him questions through phone call and other social media handles.

The re-appointed Chairman appreciated the students of the institution for their supports and commended them for the various positives activities they embarked to complement their studies. Likewise he praised the students for being law abiding, which according to him has greatly engendered peace on campus, and providing the enabling environment for the Council’s modest achievements during its first tenure between May 2017 and May 2020.

He disclosed that the Management with the approval of Council renovated the students’ hostels and classrooms, to aid learning and teaching and for the comfort of students. He thanked them for their support and cooperation during his first tenure.

The Senior Advocate noted that the purpose of his address is to appreciate and solicit for the students’ support for orderliness and peaceful co-existence on campus. He urged them to be law-abiding and adhere to the College rules and regulations which they have sworn to uphold during their matriculation. He counseled them to use all available channels of communication to ventilate their grievances when necessary.

According to him, Council will run an open door policy that will ensure fairness and justice to all students in addressing issues that comes before it. So, be assured that Council will take steps to provide a conducive and harmonious environment for learning. However, Council also has zero tolerance for indiscipline and all forms of anti-social behaviors. You are, therefore, advised to adopt acceptable conduct as you go through the College as students.

“On the issue of students’ unionism on campus, it is undoubtedly an invaluable aspect of campus life and its importance cannot be over-emphasized in advancing the cause of the students and ensuring a vibrant College community. We are all aware of the unfortunate events that led to the proscription of your union. I believe you would agree with me that no responsible management would allow unlawful or unethical behaviors on campus because of the inimical effects such actions would have on the College.”

“It is, however, heartwarming that things have changed for the better now, and necessary amendments are being made to your Union’s Constitution in readiness for full operation soon. Furthermore, a special committee set up by the Management, which includes students’ representatives is also looking into the constitution, before it is passed to the Committee on Students’ Affairs, after which Council would finally give its seal of approval for full swing students’ unionism to begin. I enjoin all of you, my dear students, to be vigilant and weary of those things that led to the proscription of your union in the first place, in order to avoid a repeat of same. Once beaten, twice shy, says a popular adage.”

Fagbemi implored students to adopt the concepts of hard work, honesty and integrity for constituted authority as would be products of this great College. He prayed that the Lord grant their desires to achieve their objectives of being in YABATECH to become adults whose parents would be proud of and become good ambassadors of the College and nation at large.
