MINISTER OF EDUCATION TASKS NEW YABATECH GRADUATES ON KNOWLEDGE-DRIVEN ECONOMY

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu has called on the new graduates of the Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) to explore all the ideas and competencies that would ensure the transition from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-driven one.

This, according to him, will increase the employability, address the socio-economic challenges and sustain the production system in the country.

He stated this at the 34th convocation ceremony of the College held in the institution at the weekend.

The minister who was represented by the Director for Special Duties at the ministry, Mrs. Vivian Wategire added that one of the challenges being faced by the country is in the area of delivering education as means of ensuring enhanced development for the country.

“It is therefore important that you increase your interaction with the industry so that there is an effective hand shake between teaching, learning research on one hand and development on the other.”

He added that the daunting challenges faced at this time nationally and globally with the rise in complexities seem to drown the impact of the government or the advancements it has achieved.

The minister disclosed further that the recent statistics for the year 2022 released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on the number of unemployed, underemployed and poverty rating of our Nation, should further propel the reason to see the use of technology based education for national growth and development.

He congratulated the new graduates for successfully completing their various courses of study.

“However, I want to remind you that you have been found worthy in character and learning and thus expected to practice the knowledge in innovative ways that would contribute to the technological advancement of Nigeria.

“On the part of the federal government, I want to assure you of our continued support in all aspects to strengthen the polytechnics in the country.”

The Rector, Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe said the convocation ceremony is the climax of the academic calendar of the institution.

“It is therefore a very special and happy occasion when we celebrate the success of our graduating students and yet another achievement of our mandate as a polytechnic.”

“I congratulate the new graduates on the successful completion of their studies in the College. It is my sincere prayer that you will all be useful members of the society and a pride to your alma mater having been found worthy in character and in learning for the award of the College Diploma.”

Speaking on the achievement of the College in the last five years, Engr. Omokungbe explained that on realization of the enormity of the responsibilities, birthed a five year strategic plan, after necessary consultations and harmonization with the governing council.

The major focus of the plan, according to him and by implication the focal point of the administration was hinged, as drivers, on Administrative Restructuring, Academic Standard and Enhancement, Staff and Students Welfare, Internal Revenue Generation, Physical and Infrastructural Development of the college and the establishment of an Endowment Fund.

The Chairman Governing Council, Prince Lateef Fagbemi in his remarks implored the Federal Government to conclude the process of changing the status of this great institution either to a degree awarding one or to a University of Technology.

“The College as at date, has all the requirements deserving to become a university.

He added that in the area of access to education, the Council has a matter of priority ensured that quality education is made available to the greatest number of desiring youths within the confines of the regulations.

“We are of the firm belief that this is the time to fulfill the promise of many years ago made by the Federal Government to ensure the conversion of the College to University. This will benefit our students and future generations of Nigerians,” he stated.

A total of 7,554 received National Diploma and Higher National Diploma certificates at the ceremony.

The best graduating Student Adisa Toheeb Paul was from the school of Engineering.
