NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ASSURES NIGERIAN YOUTHS OF LEGISLATION TO BOOST DIGITAL ECONOMY TO CREATE MORE JOBS

National Assembly has assured Nigerian youths of the needed legislation capable of boosting digital economy to generate more employment opportunities for graduates from various tertiary institutions across the country

Senate Leader, Sen.Opeyemi Bamidele SAN gave the assurance while delivering the 37th Convocation Lecture of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos titled "Entrepreneurship Development In The Digital Age: Leveraging Technology For Job Creation"

He appealed to young Nigerians with ideas to take advantage of unlimited business opportunities in the digital age to reach target clients across the globe

The Senate leader charged the graduating class of 2024 of Yaba College of Technology, to be bold enough to start now and not afraid of making mistakes

He encouraged them to be consistent in learning, research, discovery and innovation, saying doing that will create more jobs and generate more wealth

"Your success will not only be your own but rather it will create jobs and generate more wealth. It will influence your community and essentially , it will shape our nation", he stated

Bamidele stressed the need for the National Assembly to hold public hearing with youths and tech stakeholders to evaluate government performance and gather fresh ideas, calling for partnership with the National Information Technology Department Agency (NITDA) and National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to sponsor " Hack the Assembly" competition for Nigerian youth

According to him, this will provide opportunity for youth to come up with proposals for digital solutions to governance

The Senate leader emphasized the need for Nigerian government to allocate between five and 10 percent of its capital budget to directly support ICT enabled enterprises and digital skills initiative

He urged policy makers and State actors to prioritize entrepreneurship training by ensuring it inclusion in the educational curricular from primary to tertiary education

Bamidele added that educational curricular must incorporate the development of technical skills, creative innovation, digital education, problem- solving skills, the impartation of managerial capacity as well as relationship development

"This is the future, we all envisage , this is the future we look forward to and Nigeria, the supposed giant of Africa can not afford to be left behind"

"We must establish a National Artificial Intelligence AI Council to set ethical guidelines, support AI Research hubs and incentivize Nigerians ", he maintained

Similarly, Chairman of Yaba College of Technology Governing Council, 
Prof. Funso Isolaowa Afolabi said the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Tinubu's administration has continued to challenge the college to do a rethink on traditional learning models and adopt dynamic, technology-driven systems capable of producing innovators, problem-solvers, and job creators.

"We take this responsibility seriously and are constantly improving our curriculum, industry partnerships, and research outputs to reflect the demands of the modern economy",

"Today’s lecture offers us an opportunity to deepen the conversation on how technology can drive inclusive growth, reduce unemployment, and stimulate sustainable development across Nigeria. I encourage all participants to engage meaningfully and take away insights that can inspire action"
