FG CONSIDERS REPORT FOR TRANSFORMATION OF YABATECH TO YABA TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL UNIVERSITY- TINUBU ASSURES, SAYS 960,000 TRAINEES ENROL FOR VOCATIONAL ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE

Federal Government says is considering the recommendations in the report submitted by a committee on the transformation of the Yaba College of Technology to Yaba Technical and Vocational University to strengthen the capacity of the  institution to produce more technically sound graduates equipped with essential skills to thrive in a challenging business environment

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who made this known on Thursday during the 37th Convocation Ceremony for the 2023/2024 graduating class of Yaba College of Technology, also revealed that over 960,000 trainees have enrolled into 25 specialized trades under the 
Vocational Enterprise Institute, aimed at ensuring young Nigerians acquire practical, and market-ready skills to fit into the needs of industries in the country

President Tinubu, a visitor to the institution, represented by the Minister of State for Education, Prof.Suwaiba Said Ahmad, explained that the transformation of the college to a university was inline with objectives of his administration's Renewed Hope Agenda to enhance technical and vocational education

"This transformation under the Renew Hope Agenda is aimed at enhancing Technical and Vocational Education by integrating hands-on technical skills with advanced research capabilities, thereby fostering innovation, economic growth and National development"

The Federal Ministry of Education according to him, is also driving large-scale digital capacity-building programmes to equip graduates for success in Nigeria’s fast-evolving digital economy.

He congratulated graduands for the first generation of graduates to experience the gains of various reforms being initiated and executed in the education sector

'I urge you to seize this moment with courage, creativity, and conviction. Take your place as builders of a new Nigeria — a nation where diligence, innovation, and integrity are the true measures of success", he charged them

President Tinubu assured young Nigerians of the needed financial support for their educational pursuits, citing the success of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund initiated by his administration to provide interest free loan for students admitted into various public tertiary institutions across the country

"As of October 2025, NELFUND has disbursed over ₦50 billion to approximately 624,535 students across 303 tertiary institutions"

He added that the present administration also introduced the Students’ Venture Grant, designed to empower students with viable and creative business ideas, to further support innovation and youth entrepreneurship,

"Through these reforms, we are building an education system that empowers young Nigerians with the skills, opportunities, and support they need to compete, innovate, and thrive in a dynamic global economy", he stated

Also Rector of the college , Dr (Engr.) Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul described the President Tinubu's approval for transformation of the 78 year-old institution to a specialized university, as single greatest recognition

"This is the single greatest recognition of our 78 years of excellence and the strongest affirmation that YABATECH is ready to power Nigeria’s next phase of innovation-driven growth," he said

He noted the contributions of Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa for believing in the capacity of the college to champion the emergence of the first specialized university dedicated to TVET and Skills Development in Africa

He equally acknowledged Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad for her love for the College and and contributions to Education in Nigeria while appreciating the the Chairman and entire member of the Governing Council for their tireless efforts and passion for the growth of the College

" I thank the Principal Officers, members of the Academic Board, Management, staff, students, alumni, community members, security agencies and all other stakeholders for the loyalty, commitment and steadfastness in the course of my stay in office.", he appreciated

Rector noted that the introduction of certificates collection by graduands on convocation was part of Innovations to improve on administration of the institution

He charged the graduating students to look forward for a future filled with promises, possibilities and the bondless potentials

Equally Chairman of YabaTech Governing Council, Prof. Funso Isolaowa Afolabi expressed the commitment of the council to future of the college when it eventually transformed to a university

He listed the eleven-point agenda to include raising a new generation of innovators and job creators, strengthening technical and vocational training, expanding digital and smart learning systems, and advancing research and innovation centres in areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics and Spatial Centred Digitalization for development

Others are deepening partnership with government and industry, establishing strong entrepreneurship hubs, prioritizing staff motivation and excellence, upholding discipline, merit and integrity, promoting gender inclusion and youth empowerment, sustaining YabaTech's legacy as Nigeria's model of practical education and directing more sustainable promotion of able -philanthropist and stakeholder

Prizes were presented to outstanding graduating students including overall best graduand Ani Faith Ada of Office Technology Management Department and overall best at the National Diploma level, Esiagu Joseph Chibuikem of the Civil Engineering Department.
National Diplomas, Higher National Diplomas, and Certificates were later conferred on 8,654 graduands of the 2023/2024 Academic Session who have been found worthy in character and in learning: including 291 who bagged Distinction, 2,434 finished with Upper Credit , 4,403 got Lower Credit while the remaining 1,526 finished with Pass.

Similarly Fellowship Awards of the college were conferred on the Senate leader, Opeyemi Bamidele SAN and Sen. Solomon Olamilekan Adeola for their various contributions to the growth of Nigeria.
