The Management of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has unveiled a Gelede goddess image donated by His Royal Majesty, Oba Owolabi Adesina Adeyemi, Maforunyomi 1, Onisabe of Igbobi-sabe, Lagos State.

The Gelede goddess image mask is one of the cultural heritage in yorubaland donated to the college Yaba Art Museum Centre by the Onisabe of Igbobi-Sabe in commemoration of his 10th Year coronation anniversary held in the college tagged “Gelede Comes".

Yaba Art Museum (YAM) is noted for the training, researching and preservation of culture and traditions in form of diverse artworks collections.

Oba Adeyemi said the dination is to express his passion for the promotion and preservation of Yoruba heritage, culture and live for traditions.

During the GELEDE COMES unveiling Exhibition by YAM, the Chief Lecturer in SADP and Trustee of YAM, Dr. Adeola Balogun noted that Oba Adeyemi organised the first Gelede festival in the year 2022.

He disclosed that when YAM officials paid courtesy visit to the King early this year, he donated Gelede mask to the College to show how pertinent he is as far as culture is concerned, and in support of the vision of the Museum for culture rebirth and importance of promulgation indigenous knowledge and wise knowledge based for development in the society.

Balogun hinted that the exhibition is to highlight the importance of indigenous knowledge system in which YAM continues to strive in its aim to serve both cultural and education purposes with the intent to teach, train and be a resource space for learners and researchers.

In the course of the exhibition, YABATECH Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, represented by the Deputy Rector Administration, Mr. Uduak Iyang Udoh welcomed Oba Adeyemi to the College and thanked him for the donation of Gelede mask which shows the importance of Yoruba culture, and the College is elated to felicitate with the King for the 10th Year Coronation Anniversary.

Rector appreciated Oba Igbobisabe for his continuous support to the College even in the time of challenges, he prayed that the institution will not cease to enjoy his support throughout his term in office.

He thanked the immediate past Rector, Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe who was also in attendance for the establishment of prestigious Yaba Art Museum during his tenure as Rector.

The Curator of YAM, Dr. Odun Orimolade praised Oba Adeyemi for his love and passion for the conservation of Yoruba culture, and that is why YABATECH deem it fit to join him in the celebration of his 10th year coronation anniversary.

Nigerian art collector, Omooba Yemisi Shyllon who was part of the dignitaries at the exhibition disclosed that Gelede is not just about mask, but it is about the indigenous culture of Yoruba land.

Shyllon said that Yoruba is the only culture that gives recognition to the complimentary role of women, and Gelede is about celebrating women for their invaluable roles in the society.

Oba Adeyemi in his remarks thanked YABATECH for joining him to celebrate his 10th Year Anniversary, he appreciated Omooba Yemisi Shyllon for being keen in conservation of Yoruba culture, he said that Yoruba culture is very important and should be preserved.

He thanked God for sparing his life to witness 10th year Anniversary, and appreciated God for peace and tranquility in his kingdom.

Some dignitaries present at the exhibition were His Royal Highness Babatunde Ogunubi, Onisasa of Sasa Kingdom, Engr. Oba Monsuru Ladega, Olu of Agunyi, Chief Dawodu Bale of Abule Ijesha, High Chief Onisiwo, High Chief Odofin, High Chief Olowa of Onisiwo kingdom, High Chief of Eletu of Onisiwo kingdom, Dr. Toyin Shogbesan, Dean, SADP, Dr. C.C. Ndubuisi, Dr. Emmanuel Irokanulo and Otunba Ogunde. Others are the renown artist Kolade Osinowo, the Dean, School of Art, Design and Printing , Dr. Chinese, entire staff of the School and other notable figures in the world of Arts in Nigeria.
