Polymer Technology and Textile Technology Programmes

Department of Polymer and Textile Technology, Yaba College of Technology, offers;

1 National Diploma (ND) - Polymer Technology

2 a. National Diploma (ND) - Textile Technology

   b. Higher National Diploma (HND) - Textile Technology

Why study Polymer Technology?

It is a branch of Materials Technology where the applicable knowledge of polymer science and engineering is employed in the processing and manufacturing of FMCG and household/domestic products, electronics, gadgets, machine parts, engineering structures, etc. In essence, the program involves the study of processing, manufacturing, analysis, and application of long-chain macromolecules to realize useful products, and also to render technical solutions where applicable. Most common products developed from polymer technology include varieties of Plastics, rubber, Foams, Paints/Varnishes/Coatings, Adhesives, Pastes/Slurries, etc. These products are utilized in industries such as Automobile, Aerospace, Marine, Medical, Packaging, Information Technology, Electronic/Electrical, Civil Engineering Crude Oil Exploration, and so much more

Who is a Polymer Technologist?

A Polymer Technologist is one who utilizes acquired hands-on scientific skills and knowledge of structures and properties of polymeric materials in relevant technical, scientific, and engineering fields that involve the development, design, production, and management of processing and manufacturing polymeric-based articles. The polymer technologist is also found as a Quality Control Personnel, Research and Development Technologist, Technical Manager, and Forensic technologist in industries/set-ups where the application of analytical, consultative, research, and development skills and techniques are employed. These industries include FMCG (Fast Moving Commodity G o o d s), Oil and  Gas, C o n s t r u c t i o n, Aerospace/Aeronautics, Marine, Automobile, Power, Sports, Safety, Waste Recycling/Management, and many others.

Apart from these options mentioned above one could also venture as an entrepreneur or self-starter, for instance, a Technical Consultant who renders technical solutions to industries or clientele where polymers are used alone or in conjunction with other materials (probably as a part or composite structures). One could also develop some technical craft using structures or materials that are polymeric in nature to make products that potential or target clientele/consumers would find value in one’s expertise. All these while being aware and in tune with on-going advancements, developments, and innovations in this field of study.

Why study Textile Technology?

Textile Technology is an aspect of materials technology that utilizes science and engineering for the processing, development, and manufacture of several varieties of materials to obtain textile/fabric structures. This involves applying acquired knowledge for the conversion of naturally occurring and synthetic fibers, yarns, and fabrics to realize textile structures used in Clothing, Upholstery, Fashion, Military Apparel/Gear, Medical Textiles, Sports, Air, and Liquid Filtration, Geotextiles, Personal-Protective Clothing, Packaging Materials/Accessories, and innovations that include “smart/intelligent” and “functional” textile structures/materials.

Who is a Textile Technologist?

A Textile technologist is one who utilizes acquired hands-on scientific skills and knowledge of structures and properties of raw and finished textiles, which involves the conversion of fibers or filaments to all types of yarns or fabrics through methods such as spinning, weaving, knitting; the manufacture of non-woven materials, dyeing, printing, and finishing. They also troubleshoot problems involved in the production of textile fabrics/structures, hence incorporating innovative technologies to facilitate improved and efficient manufacturing and production processes

For career prospects, industries where textile technologists are found relevant include:

Spinning Mills, Weaving and Knitwear Plants, Furniture and Interior Design, Automobile, Aeronautic, Medical, Dye Houses, Defence (for bullet proof vests, protective gear, etc.), Construction/Civil Engineering (geotextiles), Forensics, Agriculture, Packaging Materials/Accessories, Laundry Units etc.

In such industries, they occupy positions such as Process engineer, Forensic technologist, Medical Textile Engineer, Quality Control Personnel, Computer-Aided Design Technologist, Research and Development Technologist, Supply Chain Managers, Administrative roles, etc. In addition to start-up entrepreneurs and consultants.
