ZULUM, LADY DOJA & SUMONU NOW YABATECH FELLOWS

The governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, the matriarch of Otedola's family, lady Christine Doja Otedola and Comrade Hassan Adebayo Sunmonu, former President, Nigeria Labour of Congress, will today be conferred with the highest  Fellowship award of Yaba College of Technology at the college’s 35th Convocation Ceremony.



Speaking at the Pre-Convocation Press Conference to usher in activities lined up for the Ceremony, the Rector, Dr. Engr Ibraheem Abdul stated that in line with the tradition and mandate of the polytechnic education, the trio are  deserving  Nigerians worthy to be honoured by the foremost and premier tertiary institution in Nigeria.



According to him, lady Christine Doja Otedola has been an accomplished public servant and philanthropist whose commitment to excellence and professionalism during her service years at the University of Lagos earned her the nickname ‘Madam Efficiency’ by the students and the staff.



The Matriarch of the Otedola family, teacher and wife of the former Lagos State Governor Pa Michael Otedola, he said, has played and still playing significant roles in the sustenance and acceptance of Yaba College of Technology by the good people of Epe and Odoragushin town in particular.



 “With her support, her husband, His Excellency, late Michael Otedola, former Governor of Lagos State donated the land where the College is situated in Odoragushin town of Epe. The family offered the land free of charge on the ground of their love for education and the development of the youths. Even at 91, Mama still plays a very active role in mentoring the staff and the students of the College. She remains a worthy role model to all Nigerians”, the Rector asserted.



Comrade Hassan Adebayo Sunmonu, he said, is a Nigerian trade unionist, who was the first President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) formed in 1978.



“He is a former General-Secretary of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU). Throughout his career, Sunmonu has received numerous accolades and recognitions for his contributions. His impact on the Nigerian labour movement and political landscape has earned him the reputation of a resilient and dynamic leader; a worthy alumnus of Yaba College of Technology, who once led YABATECH Students Union.  Comrade Hassan Adebayo Sunmonu's dedication to labour activism and advocacy for workers' rights have left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s civil servants and private workers. His legacies serve as an inspiration for current and future generations of trade unionists and politicians, reinforcing the importance of standing up for justice and fairness in the society”; the seventh Rector of the College stated.



Engr. Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, the governor of Borno State  according to Engr Zulum, “is a seasoned and accomplished administrator, whose experience spanned Local Government administration as a staff, education as a Polytechnic Rector and a University Lecturer who has contributed to the development of young men and women in the country before venturing into politics. His astuteness and accomplishment in administration and management of people and resources won him the governorship position since 2019. His sound intellect and leadership pedigree are pillars and reflections of his noble achievements. Through his leadership, he has become a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration to Nigerian youths.”



 Today, the College will be graduating a total number of 7,717 students of the 2021/2022 academic session, who have been found worthy in character and learning.



“ Two Hundred and Fifty-Four (254) of these students had distinction class, One Thousand, Eight Hundred and Ninety-Three (1,893) students graduated in Upper Credit division, Three Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty (3,940) students are graduating in Lower Credit division while One Thousand, Six Hundred and Thirty (1630) are in the Pass grade”
