Yabatech Rector Calls On NBTE For Regular Training

The Rector of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe has called on National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to ensure and encourage regular training of all levels of staff.

He made the passionate plea during the Baseline Assessment of digital literacy proficiency and emerging skills in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), organized by NBTE in partnership with Commit Technology and Consult Limited for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in South west, held recently at YABATECH.

Omokungbe noted that the importance of ICT training cannot be overemphasized as it is the bedrock of technological, socio and economic development. It is vital that the lecturers are equipped with the appropriate training to be able to transfer knowledge.

He commended the initiative of NBTE in ensuring that both staff of the board and TVET institutions are empowered in the area of ICT/Digital Technology, particularly in the era of Covid 19 which has affected the human activities in all sectors in general and the education sectors in particular.

“We are all aware that ICT have the potentials to accelerate and improve teaching, learning and research. It is therefore much more crucial that workers continuously update their knowledge and skills for sufficient service delivery. It is hoped that by the end of the training, the objective of this exercise of enhancing productivity would have be achieved. On our part in Yabatech, we would continue to cooperate and support the NBTE and all other institutions in capacity building such as this.

In his Keynote address, the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje ably represented by NBTE South West Director, Mr. Olubode Fajuyigbe disclosed that the objective of the training is to empower staff of TVET institutions with the emerging skills for enhanced productivity, and to produce students and graduates with employability skills across borders in the modern economy.

He hinted that prior to this time, planning on Digital Literacy and skills acquisition is based on assumptions and perhaps is the reason why no significant and measurable impact has been achieved. This exercise will enable the Board establish the baseline information on Digital Literacy Proficiency of the TVET workforce and students in order to engender planning based on data and expectedly produce a measurable, greater and positive impact on ICT skills.

Bugaje said that the Centre will also provide the framework for a strong comprehensive strategy to ensure that workforce; students and graduates are armed with the critical competencies they need to succeed in today’s digital economy. The Board in partnership with the Commit Technology and Consult Limited will drive this project in TVET institutions.

The Secretary emphasized that skills programme is expected to bridge the gap, define knowledge needed for establishing business practices and career paths that will provide practical solutions to increasing unemployment. One of the strategies in actualizing these initiatives in our TVET institutions is to decentralize the trainings/benchmarking exercise in the newly established NBTE Zonal Offices.
