The Department of Fine Art was under the school of Art and Printing, established in 1952 as a unit under the then Yaba Technical Institute. The early products of the School specialized in Painting and Sculpture. The present Department of Fine Art under the school of Art, Design and Printing was formally established in 1981, and offers courses that do lead to the award of ND General Art as well as programme for the award of HND in Painating and Sculpture respectively. Candidates for the HND programmes are selected from the graduates with ND or equivalent qualifications. About 90 students enroll for the various courses in the Department every year. Of this number, not more than 10 are admitted to read HND in Sculpture and about 15 to 20 in Painting.
An Average of 85 students graduate every year in the various course areas. The Department has some basic facilities at its disposal. There are large studios for the Sculpture and the Painting Classes at the HND level; a Life Drawing Studio and provision of two large studios for the ND classes. A multi purpose workshop for Wood Metal Works is equally available in the Department. The Department has the benefit of qualified and highly experienced staff. In the past, the department had some great Artists like Mr. Paul Mount, Professor Y. A. Grillo, Messrs Y.A.G. Lawal, I.A. Osunde, Tolu Filani and Kolade Oshinowo amongst others.
There is also a team of non-academic staff which includes some male and female models, craftsmen, technicians and other hands.
