The Graphic Design Department was the Commercial Art section in the Department of Fine Art and Printing (established in 1953) which metamorphosed into the School of Art Design and Printing Technology in 1984 with its sections been compartmentalized into four departments; Graphics Design, Fine Art, Industrial Design and Printing Technology. Graphic Design Department offers a two year HND programme in Graphic Design and a year Certificate course in Photography, the award of HND in Graphic Design started in 1973 with only two students, the admission list gradually grew over the years in response to the increasing market demands.
Today the Department admits an average of thirty students per session and less than twenty-five students from this numbers graduate. The quality of the programme has been beefed up with a lot of emphasis on digital multimedia art and product design. Students who have aptitude for this programme are admitted from the ND graduates from General Art Section of Fine Art department. There is a close co-operation between the Graphic Design and the Printing Technology Department, in the training of students in Graphic reproduction where various techniques are taught on the conversion of original ideas into print, using the traditional methods and emerging digital technologies.
This Department with a large and well-equipped computer laboratory, design studios, photographic laboratories and classrooms, started with five staff; it now has a team of eight qualified and experienced academics and three administrative staff, namely; Dr. Kunle Adeyemi (Dean School of Art, Design & Printing), Peter Ighodaro (Head of Department), Fidelis G. Ogunojemite, Mrs. Folake Adetayo, Mrs. Omoligho Udenta, Taiwo Sorunke, Taiwo Akinwande and Olabode Michael. The Administrative Staff are: Mrs. Olufunmilola Kehinde, Mrs. Abiodun F. Ogunji and Mrs. Funmilola Adisa. The first Head of Department was Olajide Oshiga and chronologically followed by Wande Ajibade, Raqib Bashorun, Akeredolu Sola, Fidelis Ogunojemite, Dr. Kunle Adeyemi and Peter Ighodaro (the present Head of Department). The objective of the department is to offer unique opportunities to students with visual talents and intellectual ability to acquire advance design skills and to produce graduates that can be self-employed and create job opportunities. At the end of the programme the products of this department should be able to use various tools effectively and demonstrate proficiency in the use of graphic techniques through the organization and presentation of the elements and principles of design. Products of the Department are in high demand and can be found in establishments involved in Graphic Design, Photography, Printing and Advertising.
