The Rector, Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe has guaranteed the Alumni Association of the institution advancing partnership. Speaking at the stakeholders meeting between Alumni Association and Alumni staff members of the College titled “Fostering Synergy for Progress”; he hinted that the Management and the Association would no longer be working at parallel, but they shall be working together.
Omokungbe promised to proffer solution to the way and means in which the Association would forge ahead and move forward.
“We shall relieve the elders of the burden we have been given them by allowing them to rest, while the younger ones would take over, elders will be at the back stage but we shall be coming to them for advice”.
“The College has inaugurated Alumni committee inclusive Alumni staff member that would work and meet up the requirement of Alumni Association for the betterment of the Association”.
He noted that the Management had met with the Institute of Petroleum Technology the occupant of Alumni building, and proper arrangement would be put in place which will enhance adequate compensation to the Association.
“The annual Alumni dues of graduating students would henceforth be collected by Management on behalf of Alumni and which will in turn remit the check-up dues to the purse of the Association as at when due”.
Rector revealed that Management has sent some Alumni staff of the College to study how Alumni Association is being run in University of Lagos (Unilag) and University of Nigeria (UNN), because their Alumni are actively working and fruitful.
“I have discussed with the Alumni President about the Alumni in United Kingdom and America and their links have been given to him; we shall go and launch the Alumni Association in diaspora, and together we shall partner for the progress of the Association”.
Earlier in his welcome address, the President of Alumni Association, Pastor Oluwafemi Martins highlighted the 8 years face off with the Management majorly as a result of communication misunderstanding.
“We thank God that steps have already been taken by the new administration under our own (my brother), our able Rector, Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe. I must also quickly place on record appreciation of the meeting with the entire College Management at the instance of the Registrar- the first of its kind as far as I can recall. These steps are evidence that the wilderness years are over and the Lord will restore the years consumed by the locust, the cankerworm and the caterpillar. Let me also thank the Management for confirmation that it will restore payment of Alumni dues by graduating students which was stop as a result of frosty relationship”.
He stated that the Association is putting up a proposal that would be sent to the Rector for consideration on how to improve in the College Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
“Let me raise a point of observation here, there are news going round about the change in name of our Alma Mater to City University Yaba, and the possibility of restructuring the programs offered by the College. I do believe if there are so, then there is still room for improvement in the communication link between the Management and the Alumni Association. We may need to act urgently and decisively”.
Martins thanked Yabatech Governing Council Chairman, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) and the entire members of the council for standing by the Association at the most challenging period during the preparation for and on the day of the 70th Anniversary celebration. He was the first person to arrive and the last among the dignitaries to leave.
“I am sure in his charge our able Rector will be able to assuage the fears of the Executive Council of the Association by highlighting his roadmap for the future as well as how we can ensure that staff members who are Alumni would be more participatory in the activities of the association. Togetherness we shall take our Alma Mater to the greater height”.
