About Our Department

Welcome to languages

Languages department is one of the three that make up the School of Liberal Studies which came on stream in 2002. The other two departments are Social Sciences and Mass Communication.

The School of Liberal Studies replaced the erstwhile General Studies Department which was inaugurated in 1985, as a service department, to provide the general education component in the students’ curricula, and to improve their knowledge of English, as well as the social political and economic environment in which they live.

Through the teaching of Use of English, Technical English, Communication Skills, Literary Appreciation and Oral Composition, French and Yoruba, Languages department has endeavoured to provide a broad-based education designed to sharpen students’ communication skills, inculcate the idea of national unity and at the same time prepare students for effective leadership role and to make positive contribution to national greatness.

There are fifteen (15) lecturers in the department, most of whom are pursuing various Ph.D programmes in English and Literature, across Nigeria Universities. These academics, who have also published quality and relevant academic materials, strive to meet the language, literary, as well as the communicative needs of the great College; hence, an average of three hundred and fifty (350) teaching hours a week, are dispensed in service duties to all the department of Yaba College of Technology.
